EU and its new promise with the fight against climate change.
According to a BBC News article published on December 12th, the EU authorities finally communicated a new target to tackle the problem of climate change. They have agreed to reduce greenhouse gases by 55% by 2030. Their previous objective was to reduce them by 40%, so it is a more ambitious plan.
This is a step forward for the EU, as it is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Its new promise brought with it countries like Poland, which the EU set out to help with a promise of funding for its transition to clean energy.
In addition, according to the information released from the note, the EU commission will develop plans for all 27 states to also be part of the 55% objective.
The burning of fossil fuels in the EU energy sector accounts for more than 75% of the country’s total emissions. Therefore, by 2030 the acquisition and use of renewable sources should reach 66%, leaving fossil fuel sources at less than 20%.
Even so, environmental organizations argue that 55% is not enough. For Greenpeace, the reduction of carbon emissions in the EU must be at least 65%.
For its part, Europe, has not yet closed its target but are talking about a cut of 60%. Meanwhile Australia is still standing with its promise of emissions by 2030. They have improved its latest targets, and its commitment to the environment is serious.
